17th International Conference on Aquatic Invasive Species

Westin San Diego
San Diego, CA
August 29-September 2, 2010

There will also be a workshop on Wednesday, September 1st that requires advanced registration.

Understanding and Describing Impacts of Aquatic Non-indigenous Species

Understanding and describing impacts of aquatic nonindigenous species (ANS) is a difficult task. Significant challenges include: the paucity of impact data regarding many ANS; the uncertainty often surrounding the existing data; the variety and relevance of different data types, many of which are observational or anecdotal in nature; and the lack of common descriptors for impact magnitude and type. Resolving these issues in order to accurately assess ANS impacts is critical given the increasing frequency of invasions and the associated legislative and regulatory decisions that require reliable descriptions of species' impacts.

This interactive workshop will present resource managers and others with responsibility in the marine environment with a suite of nonindigenous species, with directed discussion and the opportunity for the participants to provide their assessment of the impacts. The outcomes of this workshop will assist efforts to develop a comprehensive framework to describe the types and magnitudes of impacts to environmental, economic, social, cultural, and human health values, and how to proceed in situations with scarce, uncertain, or non-experimental data.

While all backgrounds and experience levels are welcome, this workshop also involves a short, online exercise to be completed several weeks before the conference. Please contact Alisha Dahlstrom at alishad@amc.edu.au by August 9, 2010 for more information or if you are interested in participating.

Aquatic Invasive Species Awareness Day at GLIER

The Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research (GLIER), Windsor ON
November 10, 2009

As part of our Outreach initiatives, CAISN showcased the 3rd installment of its Canadian AIS Exhibit at the Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research in Windsor Ontario.

The newest AIS exhibit includes a wide variety of vivid graphics, video displays and an interactive video game on how to stop the spread of AIS. CAISN researchers contributed to the exhibit’s scientific content and enjoyed the opportunity to showcase their current research to the public including many young Canadians.

In addition to the exhibit opening, CAISN graduate Johanna Bradie, gave a slide-show presentation on AIS, and risk assessment of various pathways of AIS introduction. Grade 7 and 8 students from St. Francis elementary school, participated in a poster competition, with top awards going to a group of five students that studied the Green Crab. All students expressed how they enjoyed working on the project and that they knew little, if anything, about aquatic invaders before participating in the contest.

We are proud of CAISN’s outreach program and dedicate a lot of effort into educating the public about issues surrounding AIS.

Dorset Bythotrephes Conference 2009

The Leslie Frost Centre, Dorset ON
October 1 - 2, 2009

Dr. Norman Yan, CAISN member and York University Professor, arranged and led the 2 day workshop in the woods. Presentations were given on both mornings by international researchers, CAISN students and Principal Investigators. A visit to the nearby Ministry of the Environment FLAMES laboratory allowed for a live demonstration of Bythotrephes experiments. As well, a meeting took place to finalize plans for all CAISN lake sampling efforts and Bythotrephes projects.
